Joan Harrison

Joan Harrison, 86, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Ridgely Cemetery, Ridgely, Mo. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Village Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Kansas City Athenaeum, 900 E. Linwood, KCMO 64109, or to the donor's choice. Joan was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Platte County, Mo., to Irvin and Allene Newman. She graduated from Edgerton High School and William Jewell College with a degree in Mathematics. Joan taught Mathematics in Edgerton, Mo., and then moved to Kansas City and shortly thereafter to Prairie Village where she raised her children and substitute taught in the Shawnee Mission School District. Joan married her husband after completing her degree at William Jewell College. Joan and David were married 56 years. She was a member of the Athenaeum, PEO Chapter GZ, active in her church circle, book club, and women's classes. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, David T. Harrison. Survivors include her children, Carol (Randy) Odam, Paul (Kathleen) Harrison, Nancy (David) Longhurst; a sister, Joyce Porter; her grandchildren, Chris Odam, Laura (Kevin) Hyland, Ginny Odam, Ben Odam, Brian Harrison, Eric Harrison, Harrison Longhurst, and Natalie Longhurst; and great grandchildren, Kate Hyland and George Hyland.
